A Balanced Equation

With life transplanting me out of my usual, hectic Chicago and transplanting me into a period of rest in Waltham suburbia, I had a chance to reflect over my short, yet formative adult years. I came to the realization that God not only brought me to Boston on this journey to live and love radically, so that others could see Him in New England, but I am also here to make me more like Him.

As a science teacher, I love equations. They just make sense to me.

So I thought about how I’ve been unintentionally, but ever so impactfully,  misusing a very important equation:  Christ = Enough.

I added my own desires in! For example:

Christ + a good church = enough

Christ + great friends = enough 

Christ + abundant finances = enough

Christ + job security = enough

So, I asked myself questions about my equation.

Do I desire God more than his blessings?

Do I desire God more than a healed relationship?

Do I desire God more than my health status?

Do I desire Him more than wanting to be financially stable?

When I found myself answering no to many of these types of questions, I realized that I need dig deep, reflect, commit, and fix my eyes on the only One who could satisfy my heart.

Since my realization, a new prayer has filled my heart: to know God’s heart!  That is, to be right at the center of His will and that, as long as I live, Christ will be enough for me. It doesn’t matter what I have or what I don’t have.  As long as I have Christ, I have everything. He is my reward. “The cross before me, the world behind me. No turning back, no turning back.”

Acts 20:24 reflects Paul modeling this for all of us.

“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”

My challenge to you is to think about the following:

Is your equation unbalanced? Why?

What in this world are you trying to add to Christ to get to “Enough” and what do you need to put that behind you?

Remember, all you need is Christ.

Put the rest behind you and – “No turning back, No turning back”
