WHAT'S IN A NAME?
The name, NewCity Church, is a direct reflection of what makes Newton, MA historic, respected, and beloved. Our name derives from the City's former name "Newtown" and its reputation as "The Garden City." A homage to the heritage and identity of the City and a deep desire to provide an environment for people to experience God and the Church anew with fresh eyes and hearts is what runs deep in the fabric of our identity.
Located just outside of Boston, Newton, MA is a vibrant, generationally and culturally diverse community comprised of 13 distinctive villages. Known well as a part of the Boston Marathon route, Newton (known as "The Garden City") is a community-oriented City that is well respected for the quality of education, community vitality, beautiful land, and historical architecture. Voted as one of the 10 best communities to live in, it is home to more than 80,000 residents and home of Boston College, Mount Ida College, and Lasell College.
Though education and affluence are a common thread for this historic Massachusetts City, research shows that there is a broken tie between everyday life and faith in God and the Church - whether indifferent and disengaged with faith and the Church or only recreationally involved with their faith. According to Percept Group Inc. and PewResearch:
- Of 8.1 million people in the Greater Boston area, less than 3% of the population identify as Evangelical Protestant Christians - a deep contrast from the national average of 25.4% who identify as Evangelical Protestant Christians
- 52% of Newton residents believe that God is actively involved in the world
- 43.4% of Newton residents indicate that they are "not involved with their Faith," as compared to the national average of 34.7%
- 30.6% of Newton residents indicate that they are "somewhat involved with their Faith"
Passionate about social justice and racial equality, Newton residents also deeply value local mission and community engagement and charity. These ideals are mutually shared values between NewCity Church and the residents of Newton.
NewCity Church desires to be a community of transformed, faith-filled individuals and families who seek justice, live authentically, embrace the community, love each other, and introduce others to a transformational, life-changing experience with God.
